IMPORTANT INFORMATION

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has released the notification for the Indian Economic Service/Indian Statistical Service (IES/ISS) Examination, 2026. Candidates are required to apply online through the official website.

IMPORTANT DATES

  • Date of Notification: 11.02.2026
  • Last Date for Submission of Application: 03.03.2026 (until 18:00 hours)
  • Date of Examination: Commencing from 19th June, 2026

VACANCY DETAILS

The tentative number of vacancies for the Junior Time Scale of the Services are as follows:

  • Indian Economic Service (IES): 16 vacancies
    • One (01) vacancy is reserved for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) under category 'e' (multiple disabilities).
  • Indian Statistical Service (ISS): 28 vacancies
    • Two (02) vacancies are reserved for PwBD. One carried-forward for Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH) and one fresh vacancy for Special Learning Disability/Multiple Disability (SLD/MD).

Note: The number of vacancies is tentative and subject to change.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Nationality

A candidate must be a citizen of India, a subject of Nepal/Bhutan, or a Tibetan refugee who came to India before January 1, 1962, or a person of Indian origin who has migrated from specified countries with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Age Limit (as on 01.08.2026)

  • A candidate must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 30 years.
  • The candidate must have been born not earlier than 2nd August, 1996 and not later than 1st August, 2005.
  • Age Relaxation: Applicable for candidates belonging to SC/ST, OBC, Defence Services Personnel, Ex-servicemen, and PwBD categories as per government rules.

Educational Qualifications

  • For Indian Economic Service: A Post-Graduate Degree in Economics/Applied Economics/Business Economics/Econometrics from a recognized university.
  • For Indian Statistical Service: A Bachelor's Degree with Statistics/Mathematical Statistics/Applied Statistics as one of the subjects OR a Master's degree in Statistics/Mathematical Statistics/Applied Statistics from a recognized university.

Candidates who have appeared or intend to appear for the qualifying examination are also eligible to apply but must produce proof of passing before the Interview/Personality Test.

APPLICATION FEE

  • Fee: ₹200/- (Rupees Two Hundred only).
  • Exemption: Female candidates and candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Persons with Benchmark Disability (PwBD) are exempted from payment of fee.
  • Mode of Payment: Net Banking, Visa/Master/RuPay/Credit/Debit Card/UPI Payment.

HOW TO APPLY

  1. Candidates must apply online at https://upsconline.nic.in.
  2. The application process involves four modules: Account Creation, Universal Registration (URN), Common Application Form (CAF), and Examination Specific Module.
  3. Candidates are required to upload a recent photograph, a live photograph, and their signature in the prescribed format.
  4. Details of a valid Photo ID Card (Aadhaar, Voter Card, PAN, etc.) must be provided during registration.
  5. No withdrawal of application is permitted after final submission.

SCHEME OF EXAMINATION

The examination will consist of two parts:

  • Part I - Written Examination: Maximum 1000 marks.
  • Part II - Viva Voce (Interview): Maximum 200 marks.

A. Indian Economic Service

  • General English: 100 Marks (3 hrs)
  • General Studies: 100 Marks (3 hrs)
  • General Economics-I: 200 Marks (3 hrs)
  • General Economics-II: 200 Marks (3 hrs)
  • General Economics-III: 200 Marks (3 hrs)
  • Indian Economics: 200 Marks (3 hrs)

B. Indian Statistical Service

  • General English: 100 Marks (3 hrs)
  • General Studies: 100 Marks (3 hrs)
  • Statistics-I (Objective): 200 Marks (2 hrs)
  • Statistics-II (Objective): 200 Marks (2 hrs)
  • Statistics-III (Descriptive): 200 Marks (3 hrs)
  • Statistics-IV (Descriptive): 200 Marks (3 hrs)

EXAMINATION CENTRES

The examination will be held at the following centres: Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Cuttack, Delhi, Dispur, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Patna, Prayagraj (Allahabad), Shillong, Shimla, and Thiruvananthapuram. Centre allotment is on a 'first-apply-first-allot' basis for certain centres.
