Pay Scale
The pay scale for Assistant Surgeon (General) is Level-22, ranging from Rs. 56100 to Rs. 205700.
Eligibility Criteria
Age (as on 2025-07-01)
- SCs, SC(A)s, STs, MBC&DNCs, BCs, BCMs (including Ex-Servicemen belonging to these communities): No Maximum Age Limit (Candidates should not have completed 60 years of age).
- Others: 37 Years
- Differently Abled Candidates to "Others": 47 Years
- Ex-Servicemen Belonging to "Others": 48 Years
Age concession for Ex-servicemen is applicable as per rules.
Educational Qualification
- Candidates must possess an MBBS Degree or its equivalent from a University/Institution recognized by the University Grants Commission and approved by the Medical Council of India.
- Must be a registered practitioner under the Madras Medical Registration Act, 1914.
- Must have served as House Surgeon (CRRI) for a period of not less than twelve months.
- Must have registered their name in the Tamil Nadu Medical Council on or before 2025-11-21.
- Candidates are required to undergo the Tamil Eligibility Test (SSLC Standard) with a minimum qualifying mark of 40%.
Citizenship
Candidates must be a citizen of India, a subject of Nepal or Bhutan, or a person of Indian Origin migrated from specific countries with the intention of permanently settling in India.
Reservation Details
The rule of reservation and communal rotation is applicable as per the existing orders of the Government of Tamil Nadu.
- Backward Class Muslims (BCMs): Separate reservation of 3.5% within the 30% reservation for Backward Classes.
- Differently Abled Candidates: 4% of the posts are reserved. A certificate of physical fitness from a Government Medical College Medical Board is required.
- Persons Studied in Tamil Medium (PSTM): Reservation as per Section 2(d) of the Tamil Nadu Appointment on Preferential Basis in the Services under the State of Persons Studied in Tamil Medium (Amendment) Act, 2020. Candidates must provide evidence of having studied through Tamil medium up to the prescribed educational qualification.
- Ex-Servicemen: 5% of substantive vacancies are reserved.
- Women: 30% reservation of appointments.
- Transgender Candidates: Specific provisions apply for transgender candidates identifying as 'Female' (30% women + 70% General) or 'Male'/'Transgender' (70% General).

Examination Scheme
The selection process involves two objective type examinations:
- Tamil Language Eligibility Test (10th Standard Level):
- Duration: 1 Hour
- Maximum Marks: 50
- Minimum Qualifying Marks: 40% (Exempted for Differently Abled Candidates)
- Computer Based Test for Assistant Surgeon (General) (Medical Sciences):
- Duration: 2 Hours
- Maximum Marks: 100
- Minimum Qualifying Marks: 30% for SC/SCA/ST; 35% for Others
The Medical Sciences paper will be in English only and will consist of 100 objective type questions at the Under Graduate Level. There will be no negative marking for wrong answers, and no oral test (interview) for the post. Marks normalization will be applied if the exam is conducted in multiple sessions.

COVID Duty Incentive Marks
Incentive marks will be awarded to Medical Officers, including Post Graduate Students, who rendered services during the COVID-19 pandemic in Government Medical Institutions:
- 6 to 12 months continuous service: 2 marks
- 12+ to 18 months continuous service: 3 marks
- 18+ to 24 months continuous service: 4 marks
- Above 24 months continuous service: 5 marks
These marks are awarded only to candidates who clear the Tamil Eligibility Test and must be supported by a Covid Duty Certificate (Annexure-10).
Selection Procedure
Selection will be based on the marks obtained in the Computer Based Test for the Subject Paper and incentive marks for COVID duty, strictly adhering to the rules of reservation and communal rotation of the Government of Tamil Nadu. Short-listed candidates will be called for verification of original certificates.
Conditions of Service & Undertaking
Selected candidates are provisionally appointed and must serve in Government Medical Institutions for a minimum of three years (excluding training/leave/higher education periods). They must join duty within the stipulated time and abide by the conditions, including not undertaking any course within two years of joining. Candidates already in service must produce a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their appointing authority.

Any canvassing, tampering with documents, furnishing false particulars, or suppressing material information will lead to disqualification or debarment. The Board reserves the right to reject any candidature at any stage.
