Introduction

This notification, CEN No. 08/2024, is issued by the Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) under the Government of India, Ministry of Railways, for the recruitment of various posts in Level-1 of the 7th Central Pay Commission (CPC) Pay Matrix.

Vacancy Details

  • Total Vacancies: 32,438 posts across various units of Indian Railways.
  • Post: Various Posts in Level-1 of the 7th CPC Pay Matrix.
  • Initial Pay: Rs. 18,000/-
  • Medical Standard: As per Annexure A and Chapter 5 of the Indian Railway Medical Manual Vol.-I.
    • Candidates who have undergone LASIK surgery or other surgery procedures to correct refractory error are not eligible for posts having Medical Standards A-2 & A-3. Stringent medical standards apply for A2 posts.
  • Detailed post-wise and Railway-wise vacancies are provided in Annexure B.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Nationality/Citizenship: A candidate must be a citizen of India, or a subject of Nepal/Bhutan, or a Tibetan refugee, or a person of Indian origin who has migrated from certain countries with the intention of permanently settling in India.
  • Age Limit (as on 2025-01-01): 18 to 36 years for Level-1 posts. A one-time age relaxation of 3 years has been granted due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
  • Age Relaxation: Applicable for various categories (OBC-NCL, SC/ST, Ex-servicemen, PwBD, Serving Railway Staff) as detailed in Para 5.1 of the notification.
  • Educational Qualifications: Candidates must possess the prescribed Educational/Technical qualifications as on the closing date of online application (2025-02-22).
    • Minimum qualification is 10th pass or ITI or equivalent or National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC) granted by NCVT.
    • Candidates awaiting final results of the prescribed qualification are not eligible.
    • Diploma/Degree in Engineering will generally not be accepted in lieu of Course Completed Act Apprentices/ITI for Level-1 posts.

Examination Fee

  • For all candidates (except fee concession categories): Rs. 500/-. An amount of Rs. 400/- shall be refunded upon appearing in the Computer Based Test (CBT).
  • For PwBD, Female, Transgender, Ex-Servicemen, SC/ST, Minority Communities, Economically Backward Class (EBC) candidates: Rs. 250/-. The full amount of Rs. 250/- shall be refunded upon appearing in the CBT.
  • Mode of Payment: Online only (internet banking, debit/credit cards, UPI).
  • Refund Policy: The refundable portion of the fee will be credited to the account from which payment was made or a specified beneficiary account. Incorrect bank details provided by the candidate may lead to no refund.

Reservations

  • Vertical Reservation: Provided for Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), Other Backward Classes-Non Creamy Layer (OBC-NCL), and Economically Weaker Sections (EWS).
  • Horizontal Reservation: Provided for Ex-Servicemen (ExSM), Course Completed Act Apprentices (CCAA) trained in Railway Establishments, and Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD).
  • EBC (Economically Backward Class): Entitled only to fee concession, not job reservation. Family income less than Rs. 50,000/- per annum.
  • EWS (Economically Weaker Section): Family gross annual income below Rs. 8 Lakh (for the financial year 2023-24 for CEN No. 08/2024).
  • Candidates availing reservation/relaxation benefits must possess requisite certificates in the prescribed format at the time of Document Verification.

Recruitment Process

The recruitment process involves the following stages:

  1. Computer Based Test (CBT): Single-stage, objective type with multiple choices.
    • Duration: 90 minutes (120 minutes for eligible PwBD candidates with a scribe).
    • Total Questions: 100
    • Sections: General Science (25 marks), Mathematics (25 marks), General Intelligence and Reasoning (30 marks), General Awareness and Current Affairs (20 marks).
    • Negative Marking: 1/3rd of the marks allotted for each question will be deducted for incorrect answers.
    • Minimum Qualifying Marks: UR/EWS - 40%, OBC/SC/ST - 30%. (May be relaxed by 2 marks for PwBD candidates).
    • Syllabus: Detailed syllabus for each section is provided in Para 14.1 of the notification.
  2. Physical Efficiency Test (PET): Mandatory and qualifying in nature. Candidates are called 3 times the community-wise vacancies.
    • Male Candidates: Lift and carry 35 Kg for 100 meters in 2 minutes (one chance); Run 1000 meters in 4 minutes 15 seconds (one chance).
    • Female Candidates: Lift and carry 20 Kg for 100 meters in 2 minutes (one chance); Run 1000 meters in 5 minutes 40 seconds (one chance).
    • Exemptions: PwBD, Course Completed Act Apprentices (CCAAs), Ex-Servicemen.
  3. Document Verification (DV): Candidates called in a 1:1 ratio of vacancies.
  4. Medical Examination (ME): Candidates must pass the requisite medical fitness test.

How to Apply

  • Applications must be submitted ONLINE ONLY through the official websites of the RRBs (listed in Para 21.0 A of the notification).
  • Candidates must first 'Create an Account'. The mobile number and email ID entered during account creation cannot be changed later. The chosen Railway cannot be modified.
  • Scanned Documents:
    • Recent Color Passport Size Photograph: JPEG format, 50-100 KB, against a plain white/light background, professional studio quality, face covering at least 50% of the area, without cap/dark glasses, clear front view. Keep at least 12 copies for future use.
    • Candidate's Signature: JPEG format, 30-50 KB, running handwriting (not block/capital letters), black ink on white paper.
    • SC/ST Certificate (for free travel facility): PDF format, up to 500 KB (if applicable).
    • PwBD Passport Size Photograph: Same specifications as above, but not the full body photograph used in the disability certificate (if applicable).
    • Scribe Details: Passport size photograph of the scribe (40-70 KB, JPEG), if applicable.
  • Candidates must exercise their option/preference for Post(s) and Railway(s) carefully during the application process.

Important Instructions

  • Candidates are advised to read the entire notification thoroughly before applying.
  • Only one online application is permitted per candidate per mobile number and email ID. Multiple applications will lead to rejection and debarment.
  • Candidates must keep their personal mobile number and email ID active throughout the recruitment process for communication from RRBs/RRCs.
  • Any false information, suppression of material facts, or use of unfair means will lead to rejection of candidature and debarment.
  • E-Call letters for CBT/PET/DV will be available for download only on official websites; no physical call letters will be sent.
